AT THE MUSEUM:
PROPERLY DRESSED: ETIQUETTE AND WOMEN'S FORMAL WEAR
Exhibit at the Scott County Historical Society
Opening November 14, 2009
(SHAKOPEE, MN 10/27/2009) - Are you attending any parties this season? Do you know the difference between black tie, white tie and informal wear? You will after visiting the new exhibit at the Scott County Historical Society. In this new exhibit, you will view women's formal wear from the early 1900s to the 1980s and learn a bit of etiquette on the side. Women's dresses and accessories are on display, accompanied by quotes from etiquette experts such as "Miss Manners", "Emily Post", and others. The Properly Dressed: Etiquette and Women's Formal Wear exhibit runs from November 14, 2009 through April 3, 2010.
Included in the exhibit are wedding dresses from the early 1900s to the 1950s; "Tea" dresses circa 1920-1930, "Party" dresses from Miss Shakopee to a Washington political function, as well as coats and the must-have accessories.
From the Hill to the Valley: A Landscape in Politics, exploring politics from the 1950s to today. Investigate the biting humor of political cartoons, get a feel for speech writing, cast your vote for the next exhibit theme, and much more. - Runs through July, 2009.
Today, most of us take for granted the right to vote, but for years, large sections of the population were excluded from the franchise. What were their struggles? How did they achieve success?
Passionate speeches can move us to tears and action. What is it about speeches that inspire us - or turn us off? What exactly is rhetoric?
Many cartoons make us laugh, but what makes up a good political cartoon? What components can transform an ordinary cartoon into an iconic image?
For decades campaign finance reform has been a hot political topic. How does someone conduct a fundraising campaign? What goes into financing a run for office? Do you have to be a millionaire?
Our latest exhibit From the Hill to the Valley answers these questions and explores the influence of art, voting, rhetoric and accounting on politics in this county from 1950 to today. These connections run deep and change the way citizens participate in government. From the Hill to the Valley looks at our political past and tells the story of the people that participated in government from the local to the national level.
