History Programs from the Scott County Historical Society
As part of the Scott County Historical Society's outreach efforts, field trips
to schools throughout the county keep us connected to local teachers and
students. We currently offer 2nd and 4th grade programs, traveling to
classrooms around the county with the stories and artifacts that make Scott
County unique. These trips introduce students to historical resources and
material often unavailable in their school. They also act as a fun and
engaging complement to the regular history curriculum. For school groups that
prefer to come to the museum, expanded versions of both programs involving
additional hands-on artifacts are available.
Our puppet show, "Seasons of the Heart," is designed to introduce 1st-2nd
grade students to family life among early Minnesota homesteaders. Told from
the point of view of young Ben, the puppet show stages common chores of the day
and special community events. Hands-on activities follow up on some of the
themes and details of the story, including such unfamiliar activities as butter
churning and using a washboard. These artifacts help students inquire about
history and experience it in a more accessible way.
"Destination Scott County!," a 3-4th grade program, is an interactive
program facilitated by a costumed interpreter. Primary sources and first-
person interpretation get students thinking about why Scott County might have
been an attractive place to settle in the mid-19th century, using the town of
St. Lawrence as an example. Students assume common occupations in a
settlement, such as blacksmiths, bankers, or teachers, and take turns
interpreting artifacts that have to do with their profession. This program
provides a more in-depth look at historically significant Scott County events
and people, such as S.B. Strait, founder of the short-lived town of St.
Lawrence in 1857. It also introduces students to the importance of primary
sources and artifacts in understanding history.
