Inventory Assistant

About the Position

The Inventory Assistant conducts a grant-funded inventory of the Scott County Historical Society (SCHS) object collection according to an established inventory SCHS procedure and professional museum standards and best practices. The position reports to the SCHS Curator of Collections. The ideal candidate for this position is an emerging museum professional who has a love for history and a proven ability to work independently. Some experience in object-handling, data entry, digitization or similar practical experience is strongly preferred.

About the Organization

Scott County Historical Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit museum, historic house, and research library with a mission to search, save, and share Scott County history. Located in downtown Shakopee since its founding in 1969, SCHS serves the entire Scott County community by preserving information and making it available through professional collection practices, engaging exhibits and educational outreach programs for people of all ages.

Compensation and Schedule

This position is temporary, part-time, 12-15 hours per week at a rate of $15.50/hour. It is not eligible for benefits.  Daily schedule is entirely set by the incumbent. Approximately half the hours can be done remotely. The rest will be onsite at the Scott County Historical Society, in downtown Shakopee, Minnesota.

Essential Duties

  • Use established inventory procedure to catalog the SCHS object collection

  • Rehouse objects using available supplies according to museum best practices, as needed

  • Photograph objects as they are cataloged, if required, and manage digitized collections database

  • Enter cataloged objects into the SCHS Collective Access database

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence and self-sufficiency

  • Knowledge of collections care, object handling and rehousing, inventory procedure, database management, and museum registration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with collections care, object handling and rehousing

  • Experience with database management and Collections Management Software (CMS)

  • Experience with inventory management, including best practices and procedures

Physical Capabilities Required

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs

  • Ability to climb ladders up to 10’ in height

  • Ability to travel and provide reliable transportation
